I was born and raised in Newcastle, Australia (approximately 8 hours from the snow fields). I have been snow skiing since I was 4 years old… and yes that means I skied on the old “fence palings”.
By age 14, I was racing for the Thredbo Ski Racing Club (in Australia) after deciding to test my speed through “the gates” and gaining an unqualified fastest time for the season on the NASTAR course when I was 13. I went on to compete in the Giant Slalom at the Australian Nationals, although I had a rather spectacular crash, which I am sure included arms and legs flailing everywhere for a good proportion of the race (lots of laughs). This didn’t stop my club from inviting me to represent them in Canada the following season. My ski racing career was short lived, even though I had a secret desire to return when I was older and compete in the downhill, my main focus at 14 years old was on achieving good academic results at school. I never lost my passion for fun, non-competitive snow skiing adventures with friends, and I continued to return for holiday skiing. I am now back where my heart belongs and loving spending every day on the snow.
Something we don’t know about you
I grew up surfing every day before and after school, and competing in local surfing contests. I have surfed much of the north eastern coast of Australia and I particularly love surfing at Snapper Rocks. I rode my skateboard everywhere while growing up, including to my first job in the corporate world of Sydney Australia (pretty funny now I think back). A couple of friends and I actually started a skateboard manufacturing business when we were at school. I love playing and watching tennis, and nothing beats watching an entire test match of cricket, except watching the Newcastle Knights rugby league team destroy their opposition. I am working as a ski instructor because I wanted to combine my enjoyment of teaching people in the corporate environment with my passion for snow skiing. I am absolutely loving working for New Generation Ski and Snowboard School.
