Intro to Off-Piste Ski Courses

Morzine & Avoriaz

The Portes du Soleil is a charming ski area with very extensive off-piste terrain. It’s home to 600km of slopes spanning France and Switzerland, with masses of off-piste. The variety of terrain here is hard to match.

The north-facing bowls and couloirs in Avoriaz hold snow well. This and the terrain around the Hauts Forts area give easy access to long off-piste sections.

The Swiss side of the Portes du Soleil offers further options accessible by ski from Avoriaz. Tree skiing is another strength of the Portes du Soleil, particularly surrounding Pleney.

Snow conditions are usually good in both Morzine and Avoriaz throughout January. While Avoriaz might get a bit more snow, Morzine has a more classic alpine vibe and makes a great base for your stay.

La Plagne

La Plagne is a brilliant place to start your off-piste journey. There’s a huge amount of approachable terrain here, and most of it is easy to get to straight from the lifts so you spend more time skiing and less time hiking. The Paradiski area is big enough that even after a busy week on the mountain, you can still find untouched snow without too much effort.

Late January is a great time to visit. There is a great snowbase by this point in the season, and fresh snow arrives regularly. This makes your chances of skiing powder about as good as they get. It’s a solid choice for a first off-piste experience.

Val d’Isere

Val d’Isère is one of the great off-piste destinations in the Alps. Its combination of high altitude, varied terrain, and a legendary skiing heritage make it an exceptional place to ski beyond the marked runs.

That reputation is well earned, but what sets Val d’Isère apart for off-piste skiers is the range. Alongside its more committing lines, the resort has a wealth of accessible terrain that suits those still building their confidence away from the piste.

The high altitude keeps the snowpack deep and consistent throughout the season, and the efficient lift system puts a wide variety of off-piste zones within easy reach — so there is always somewhere well suited to the day’s conditions and the group’s ability.

Courchevel & Meribel

Few combinations in the Alps work as well as Courchevel and Méribel. Both resorts sit within the Three Valleys — the largest ski area in the world. This gives you an enormous amount of terrain to work with across the week. Good snow is rarely hard to find when you have this much mountain available.

Courchevel’s north-facing slopes hold snow well and much of the off-piste is quieter than you’d expect. Méribel adds a different feel to the week, with plenty of open and relaxed terrain. It’s a hard combination to beat.

Tignes

Tignes is one of the best places in the Alps for off-piste spring skiing. The altitude keeps the snow in good shape well into March and often beyond, long after lower resorts.

The higher villages of Val Claret and Le Lac are particularly well-suited to this time of the year. Tignes in March usually brings bluebird conditions and longer days. This makes for a really enjoyable trip even after the last lift.

Tignes is one of those resorts that just works for off-piste. The altitude keeps the snow reliable, the terrain is incredibly varied, and the lift system makes it easy to cover a lot of ground without too much effort.

The resort is spread across several villages, each with its own feel, and getting to know them over the course of the week is part of what makes a Tignes trip enjoyable. Down in Les Brévières there are tree runs and sheltered descents that come into their own on stormier days. Higher up in Val Claret, you’re into open powder fields and more technical terrain. There’s something for every level of off-piste skier here.
