Val Thorens is one of the most snow sure resorts in France. Typically Val Thorens will experience over 6.5 meters of snowfall annually. The high level of annual snowfall combined with Val Thorens high elevation means that snow conditions often stay fresher for longer.

Val Thorens is an ideal place for a beginner’s introduction to skiing due to the often superb snow conditions, good weather, and easy access to any of the 11 beginner runs. It is also perfect for those looking for more technical skiing, as Val Thorens is home to 51 Red runs and 14 Black runs.

The transfer from Chambery is 1h30 (117km), from Geneva it is 2h30 (148km), from Grenoble it is 2h15 (188km) and from Lyon it is 2h15 (194km). These transfer times will however vary depending on the weather conditions with heavy snow fall effecting transfer times. Val Thorens offers excellent options for beginners.

Plein Sud: Gentle slopes perfect for practising your turns. There’s even a great “hole in the wall” burger place on the side of the slopes, ideal for satisfying that mid-ski day hunger. 

Flocons: The Flocons run, Combe-de-Thorens and Roc ski runs are connected green slopes designed specifically for beginners, offering a safe and controlled environment to learn the basics. 

In Val Thorens, a great option for advanced skiers is:

Cime Caron: This area as an array of challenging red runs, perfect for experienced skiers. Take the Col de l’audzin red down to the Boismint chair, and continue lapping the area all day. After something a little more challenging? Follow the Combe de Caron for serious black run action to get your heart pumping.

Val Thorens is part of the largest lift linked ski area in the world. As part of Les 3 Vallees ski area Val Thorens has a massive amount of terrain to ski, being home to approximately 600 kilometers of groomed pistes and 183 lifts. You can find all of these on the Val Thorens Piste Map.

Chambery is the closest airport to Val Thorens, other options slightly further away include Geneva airport, Lyon airport and Grenoble airport. These airports will, however have more variety in terms of airline, dates of travel and departure airports.

If you are looking to progress your skiing skills, Val Thorens offers a multitude of intermediate slopes:

Péclet Ski Zone: this area, situated just beneath the Glacier de Péclet, features diverse blue and red trails tailored for various skill levels. It’s a haven for intermediate skiers, offering excellent connectivity to the entirety of Val Thorens. It’s a perfect location for groups with beginner-level members honing their skills in the nearby Plein Sud area. You can indulge in thrilling skiing and periodically swing in to check on your group and take photos. This spot has panoramic views down the valley, making it a “must ski zone”.
