Backcountry Skills

Backcountry Skills

If you’re an advanced skier or snowboarder in search of the next adventure, or keen to try something a little different then our new Backcountry Skills sessions could be just the ticket. These sessions are for people who can ski or ride blues through to blacks, but are looking to improve their skills off piste. Perhaps you’re keen to learn how to glide through the fresh stuff? Or not sure how to stay on your feet and maintain a rhythm when it gets heavy, or chopped? Or you’ve watched people powering up the slopes and fancied learning how. Well what are you waiting for?

Our Backcountry Skills courses run in two session blocks. The first 2hr lesson is designed to develop your skills, confidence and technique. Then the second 4hr session gives you the opportunity to put these skills to the test off piste, with a coach on hand to give you some tips and guidance along the way.

Choose from two Backcountry Skills sessions: Intro to Off Piste or an Intro to Ski Touring/Split Boarding

And develop the skills to allow you to enjoy the ultimate backcountry adventures.

Intro to Off Piste

Develop technique at skiing or boarding off piste in this 6hr off piste course. After a basic avalanche safety briefing, the first session will focus on technique. Our aim is to help you to give you the skills and confidence to ski off piste in various conditions. The second session is where the fun begins. We’ll be putting these skills into practice in the deep stuff. And if mother nature hasn’t recently blessed us with fresh snow then we’ll tackle some variable. After which, fresh tracks will be a breeze.

  • Intro to Off Piste
  • 2 days, 6hrs total (2hr + 4hr session)
  • Day 1: 14.00
    Day 2: 9.00/9.15
  • 2 – 6 per group
  • Level 6+ skiers
    Level 4+ boarders
  • 149

Intro to Ski Touring/Split Boarding

Learn the basics of touring, either on skis, or a split board, and experience what lies outside of the piste markers.  Imagine escaping the crowds and getting off the beaten track. Picture birds flying over head, and the only people in sight, your ski buddies. Then imagine the satisfaction of reaching that empty ridge and looking down at the fresh face below, knowing you’ve earned every turn.

Still not convinced? How about the unarguable fact that some of the best lines are unreachable by lifts alone. So unless your ski budget extends to a heli trip then go grab those skins and lets get going!

During the first session we’ll give you the basics on the equipment – how to attach and remove skins, how to change the binding to allow you to walk, then ski, as well as some basic avi safety. Then the second day is our chance to put this knowledge into action, and head off on a real tour!

  • Intro to Ski Touring/Split Boarding
  • 2 days, 6hrs total (2hr + 4hr session)
  • Day 1: 14.00
    Day 2: 9.00/9.15
  • 2 – 6 per group
  • Level 7 skiers
    Level 5 boarders
  • 149

Please note our St Anton Backcountry Skills courses run for 3hrs + 6hrs, for a total of 9hrs of instruction, at a cost of €180.

Day 1: 13:00 start, Day 2: 9:15 start
