Tignes is famous for being high. The glacier reaches 3,456m, most of the pistes are above the treeline. And the off-piste draws freeriders from across the world. If you’re still learning, that can sound like a lot. It isn’t. Tignes and Val d’Isère share 300km of pistes, linking Val Claret, Le Lac, Le Lavachet, Tignes 1800 and Les Brévières with Val d’Isère. The height that brings the experts also brings reliable snow. And every village has free lifts for beginners.
If you’re new, you won’t need a lift pass on your first day. You start in Le Lac, a few steps from our meeting point, on a free magic carpet and the Rosset chair. Once you can turn and stop, you move on to the Lavachet drag and the easy greens above Val Claret. By the middle of the week you’ll be skiing longer runs like Petit Col and Le Lac.
If you’re finding your feet, the wide blues in the bowl between Le Lac and Val Claret are perfect for building confidence. On a clear day, your instructor can take you up the funicular from Val Claret to the Grande Motte glacier, above 3,000m.
Some greens are steeper than the piste map suggests, and above the treeline, flat light can make slope and sky look the same. Your instructor knows which runs to save for later in the week. On grey days, they take you down through the trees towards Les Brévières, where you can see the snow again. So a stormy day is still a good day on skis.
If you want to explore the steep or deep runs, you’re in the right place. Tignes leaves some of its black runs ungroomed on purpose, and the off-piste starts minutes from the lifts. The Vallon de la Sache alone drops 1,200m from the Aiguille Percée to Les Brévières. French law lets ski instructors take you off-piste, but not onto unmarked glaciers, which are for high-mountain guides. So please do let us know if you have a specific goal in mind so we can make sure we put you with the right team member.
Whatever your level, you’ll leave having skied more of Tignes than you thought you could.
