Intro to Snowboarding Off-Piste

If you’re a confident snowboarder who often rides at the side of or between pistes, but haven’t ventured further off-piste before. Or you’ve tried off-piste riding with mixed results, this is the ideal starting point.

You’ll practise drills to refine your technique, making off-piste snowboarding easier and safer. Your instructor will assist you in adapting to varying terrain and snow conditions. You’ll practise these techniques on the piste, then you’ll apply them off-piste.

Snowboarding off-piste carries an increased level of risk. Your instructor will cover crucial safety details you need before heading off-piste. They’ll also guide you on where to find this information. You’ll learn about avalanche safety gear, how to wear it, and its proper use. Additionally, you’ll discover how to manage a group while snowboarding off-piste.

By the end of the clinic, you’ll be able to snowboard confidently off-piste in changing snow with a solid base. You’ll understand the basics of avalanche safety. Helping you make smart choices about the terrain you ride later in the week. You’ll have connected with like-minded snowboarders. And enjoyed the best snow and routes suited to your ability in the resort.

Tips for Off-Piste Snowboard Courses

  • Ensure you’ve got comfortable boots that fit well and are the right size. This can make a break or a day in the backcountry.
  • Ensure the hire shop services your board to ensure it is in good condition.
  • Learning a new skill can be tiring, regardless of age or ability. Take breaks, as your legs will tire, especially in deep snow.
  • Mileage and confidence are key for snowboarders. So, practice outside your lessons. Start on terrain you feel good on. Then, increase the difficulty. Ensure you have solid foundations. Then, take on new skills and steeper, more challenging terrain.
  • If something knocks your confidence, try again the next day. Don’t give up. We recommend booking a private snowboard lesson if you’d prefer one-to-one coaching. You’ll get more time with the instructor to receive personalised feedback.

What to expect

  • Meet your instructor at the meeting point.
  • The instructor will ensure you have the correct snowboard and avalanche equipment.
  • Learn how to use avalanche equipment to stay safe on the mountain.
  • Instruction from a qualified instructor who will inspire you to ride in the powder like a pro.
  • You’ll be in a safe place. But you’ll also face challenges when trying new techniques. We aim to help build your confidence.
  • Insider knowledge from the instructor who knows the local mountain well. They can share things such as the best routes for your ability.
  • Explore new terrain to practice your newfound skills.
  • A friendly, social atmosphere for others learning to ride off-piste so you can learn at your own pace.
  • And a few laughs (we hope!).
  • End the lesson at the meeting point.
